Xapo has always committed to keeping your BTC safe and secure. When we started our journey, the multiSig wallet protocol was the defacto standard for safekeeping of crypto assets, and we invested in the most secure solution available to ensure that any funds held within our vaults used a minimum of 3 private keys needed to sign any transaction that allows for asset withdrawals.

As the cryptocurrency market matured in the last decade, newer solutions for safeguarding assets have emerged and currently MPC wallets are now considered the state of the art for custodians of crypto assets. With MPC wallets, a private key is split (sharded) into a number of shares held in different physical locations and the full key is never materialised. This eliminates the single point of failure risk associated with storing  private keys, as well as the risk of human error, with the added benefit of reducing the time it takes to produce a valid transaction to a few seconds.

Furthermore, with an MPC protocol you’ll be able to use the same private key to store multiple crypto assets in the future regardless of the address derivation protocol used by each blockchain. Once this feature is available, we’ll send you a separate notification.
